It reminds me of Bert Potter's rationalisation for pedophilia - the kids only suffer because society tells them its wrong, if there was no taboo against adult-child sex then the children would be able to lie back and enjoy it. Potter constructed a whole community around this point of view.

The main issue the defendants seem to have in the trial is that they did have underage sex but it was not rape, as it was with consent. Unfortunately for them the age of consent is a bit blurry given the history of Pitcairn and the trial is being held under British law where that age is 16. According to the article in The Age, he seem surprised to hear that the age of consent on Pitcairn was 16.

Prosecutors in the Pitcairn Island sex abuse trials today continued their case against the island's mayor, Steve Christian, showing the court a police video interview recorded four years ago.

As mayor of this mountainous rock, in the middle of the Pacific, Christian can be heard throughout the day over the crackly two-way radios which connect Pitcairn's 17 households, discussing administrivia and making public announcements.

Asked about dates, places and the girls' ages, he said he could not remember and to many other questions he said "no comment". But when he was shown statements from his accusers, he admitted all four would have been under 16. But he seemed surprised when told the age of consent on Pitcairn Island was 16.
