Pitcairn Islander comments on trial

Saturday, October 16, 2004

# The letter I quote below was written by one of the residents of Pitcairn Island. The contents of the letter is about one of the accusers in the trial, from someone who knew them. It was sent by the writer to a number of online news organisations with a request to publish. I've made one edit to remove the name of the complaintant concerned. Although the letter writer worked out who the person was based on publically available information (it's a small Island after all), the matter is still under trial and I don't think it would be a good idea to publish this persons name. On to the letter:

Ex Pitcairn Grandma Points Her Finger.
Since the trial began here on Pitcairn I have watched the news on the Reuters especially on the New Zealand news and the other papers that the selected media chosen by Governor Fell have written. There was one particular Woman who traveled to NZ especially for the trials from UK. There is only one 51-year-old woman from PI who lives in the UK and that woman is [editor: name removed]. She has insinuated that Steve Christian took her of on his trusty motorbike and raped her. She also insinuated that Len Brown raped her on top of Garnets Ridge and then again in her Fathers garden.
It is so unfair that she named just these 2 men, as they are a part of the major work force living here on the Island today. They have pleaded NOT GUILTY and I believe them.
I am 6 years [editor: name removed]'s junior and grew up practically next door to her. Her younger Brother was nearly the same group as us and we played at their place on the swing in their big tree and they in our front yard. [editor: name removed] had many boy friends and I didn't see her making allegations against the many outsiders who came during the end of the 60's and beginning of the 70's who each had an affair with her.
She boasted once that she have been with almost all the men on Pitcairn. She was being spiteful towards the Postmasters wife who has approached her in public to leave her husband alone. She would sneak next door from her place to the post and seduce the postmaster. He have since passed on. But the stories that link the two together have continued on. Being (in modern day term) The Pitcairn Sex worker, [editor: name removed] broke my Grand Uncles heart when she finally found an English man whom she persuaded to send her to UK. Grand Uncle collapsed as they were coming ashore from her ship and had to be carried home where he pined away and died shortly after. She was known for that expression, 'Bole et fer dollar'. (Have sex for a dollar)
All that this witness who sobbed that she was indecently assaulted at 3 years old and then raped by Christian and Brown in her teens is hard to believe when all the other events stack high against her. She pounded the table with her finger and screamed at the defense, 'You dare to call me a liar'. Well she sure didn't see the other 3 fingers pointing back at her. The Free air flight to New Zealand so she can testify, Hopefully collect her compensation that the cops offered, and a quick nip back to her hubby and grand kids back in the UK have back fired. The British Government has treaded the true Pitcairn Islanders in the mud too much. We are a STRONG community. We are like the rock we stand on.

# I've added an 'About Me' page to explain who I am and why I set up this site.

# The breadfruit hunter who makes a meal of his sport. Another breadfruit hunting article.

Then, amid the sub-tropical vegetation, he caught sight of one, dancing in the ocean breeze. Raising his rifle, he fired three shots, winging it with the second and bringing it down with the third.
His quarry lay there amid the leaves, only a trickle of sap issuing from its lifeless form. It was a clean kill. Of a piece of fruit.

# Take aim, fire: Another meal bites the dust. A story about how the Pitcairn Islanders get breadfruit, a staple of their diet. Nice to see a paper publishing non-trial related stories about Pitcairn.

His prey is not the four-legged type, however, but the firm green breadfruits that hang high on one of Pitcairn's most ubiquitous trees.

# Last defendant heard in Pitcairn.

The trial in Pitcairn continues with the final defendant, Steve Christian standing trial for six rapes and four indecent assaults.

# No haven for pedophiles.

Sexual morality might be different on Pitcairn Island, but the community was never a pedophile's haven, defence lawyers are arguing.

# Pitcairn - Impressions for download. Includes some video clips.

One could make a picture book about each of them and maybe one day I'll do so. But on a very small spot of the globe legends, truth and fairy tales, desire and reality are melted into one: on Pitcairn, the island of the Bounty mutineers

# Weather Disrupts Pitcairn Supply Link. Streaming video from TV One in New Zealand showing the rough weather that prevented supplies from being delivered at Pitcairn.
